Of course, the mood at Jim’s school during the ten days of Jim’s absence was somber. Teachers counseled Jim’s students to make sure they were supported and kept up to date. Students made cards and banners for our family to put in the funeral home during the visitation. And others put together items that connected them to their beloved teacher to display and honor him at the funeral home.
One teacher, in particular, was fighting for Jim’s honor and rights. Jim was the president of the local teacher’s union so he kept notes on all the meetings involving teachers, administration, and union negotiations. The superintendent, at the time of Jim’s death, took it upon himself to go through Jim’s desk drawers, personnel file, and personal effects. These drawers and files contained letters of gratitude from parents and students, as well as personal and union protected notes and letters.
Jim’s best friend at work was aware of the fear held by the superintendent, due to the union correspondence. Upon returning to work after visiting Jim, he asked his superintendent, “What happened to all of Jim’s personal and union correspondence?” “I shredded it”, was his reply. “If you want it, it’s in the dumpster out back.”
