Mother Mary Comes to Me…. Through the Scent of Roses

Early on in my teaching career, I worked in an inner city school with two speech clinicians, two Learning Disabilities teachers, one Early Childhood Special Needs teacher, and an occupational therapist. My job was working with first through fifth grade Developmentally Delayed children.

Since it was my first teaching job, I didn’t realize how talented and dedicated these individuals were until I moved to a different school. These professionals included me, the “newbie”, into their fold with ease and joy!

As I worked closely with this “Special Education” team, I started to see the toll the stress was taking on these beautiful souls. One day after conferring with two of my team members, the topic of stress was discussed.

“Why don’t we get trained in massage therapy?” one member suggested. Being the sensitive Taurean I am, I agreed whole-heartedly! Upon completion of the course, we were in hot demand. Before and after school, teachers were coming to us in need of a relaxing mini-massage.

Fast forward a few years… my life’s direction pointed me toward the study of energy work. While I was new to practicing energy work and experienced at giving massages, I decided to combine the two. My clients would get the full benefit of balancing their chakras, before and after the massage, and muscle tension release during the massage.

Of course, I needed volunteers to practice on so I enlisted the help of one of my work colleagues. She knew what to expect when given an Esalen massage, but she’d never had a massage with energy work.

I just knew this was going to be fun!! I proceeded to set-up my portable massage table in her hot tub room and turned on my cassette player to serenade her with angelic music. Within minutes of starting the energy work she called out… ”What was that? I just saw a flash of light coming out of my knee!” It was true, I did have one hand on her knee and I was channeling the energy, but I didn’t “see” the spark of light. During my energy sessions in the past, numerous clients had reported a need to shake their leg… as if to “shake” the energy off so I explained this to her.

Once she had shaken the energy off and continued the energy work, she stated in a calm and peaceful voice, “Do you smell anything?”. Are you wearing rose perfume or rose water?” “No, I responded, a little perplexed.” “Oh, Mother Mary comes to me through the scent of roses,” she replied.

By this time, I was wondering if adding energy to my massages was a good idea. It seemed a tad bit mystical to me. Suddenly, my cassette tape player started playing the song, “The Rose”. I was completely dumbfounded! My client didn’t know that the song was not one of the selections on the tape, but I did.

Since the massage was almost over, I asked, “What song do you hear playing?” I was wondering if I was just hearing things. “The Rose” by Bette Midler”, she replied. It was then I realized something magical was happening.

To that, I timidly asked,“Jennifer, Is Mother Mary someone you feel a personal relationship with or does she come and go, in your life?” Joyfully, she responded by telling me that she LOVES Mother Mary and, yes, she does come often to visit.

With a sigh of relief, I proceeded to tell her that in addition to the scent of roses, she was given another gift during the massage… the song, “The Rose” started playing on my tape player, but it wasn’t one of the songs on the cassette.

To this day, we still talk about the gifts we were given during that first miraculous massage.

In addition, upon consulting with her about this story, she reminded me that before the massage her knee had been causing her pain. After the massage, and from that day forward, she has not had any pain in that knee!
